1.) Panduit Training – a rental minivan is reserved for the day… Jamie is the driver. Please discuss meeting points with him.
2.) There is a new Ontario Electrical Safety Code out. We will be purchasing new code books, and trying to schedule you in groups to attend the code update courses put on by ESA. The schedule for these courses is due out in the 1st couple weeks of February.
3.) There has been much discussion recently about the requirements for filling out safety forms, and documenting safety talks. The following is a proposal I would like to discuss with you, and have some feedback.
a.) We are proposing to revise our new electronic safety forms, so they can be left “open” (editable) for the week. This would allow the foremen to add to/modify the existing forms (if a job is a continuation), instead of having to complete all new forms every day. However, a detailed job-site inspection and new forms would be started EVERY Monday morning AND whenever a new job is started.
b.) We are also proposing a combined Workplace Hazard Analysis & Safety Talk form, so foremen (AFTER discussing the daily changes with the workers) will fill in a short note each day, in a provided safety talk box on the same form. This would happen each morning after a mandatory 5-10 minute jobsite specific safety discussion.
c.) At the end of each week, the current forms will automatically be archived, and the foremen will be responsible to complete new weekly forms every Monday morning.
4.) This concept is being proposed for the following reasons:
a.) It is our intent to make a safety discussion a routine start to everyone’s work day… just the same as discussing who is working where, and what tools and materials will be required. It is not intended (and cannot be) a long and drawn out procedure. I trust that once this becomes routine, it will not be a major consumer of labour hours… but a brief discussion, followed by a few minutes of the foremen’s time to complete/update the necessary forms (AFTER everyone else is off and working for the day). As I’ve mentioned many times before… we want everyone to enjoy working safely and efficiently, and return home each day “unscathed”.
b.) Documentation is a must, in order to prove ‘due diligence’ in our effort to keep everyone safe at work. (This covers ALL of us, if an accident were to happen)
c.) Filling out new forms every day for ongoing projects is viewed as tedious and inefficient for our site staff, and is also a cost concern for some of our customers (due to the time it takes).
5.) I have created a flow chart to outline the proposal, and want to make it clear and concise, so everyone understands what is expected (and MORE importantly, what the intent of this whole concept is).
